Comms Unplugged has been running since 2017. It offers something very, very different from regular comms events. And, each year around half of attendees are in the field for the first time keen to find out what makes it so different.

I have been to every Comms Unplugged since it launched. One of my many observations from attending them all – backed up by my consultancy work with teams – is that we have a lot of frazzled and fed up comms people out there, and who are facing seemingly never-ending challenges. I have also spotted a increase in colleagues just in need of a change of scene, either for a break or for a creativity boost.
This is where the field – the field of dreams – comes in. Because you’re in a place with very like-minded people often in a similar position to you. And all of whom who have that appetite and intrigue for something just a little bit different.
A break from these work stresses, and indeed the pressures of family and personal life, can provide us with such a boost. A couple of days at Comms Unplugged also gives the chance for some clear thinking time and space away from the usual routine.
I know this from personal experience. In 2017 and 2018, dealing with some personal issues and a troublesome working relationship, I really felt like Comms Unplugged gave me the chance not just to think but also to come up with solutions and plans for tackling both issues. Which, by the way, all worked out very much for the best. The magic of the field, you see.
What if I don’t know anyone there?
It’s not a problem. Comms Unplugged is the least cliquey event (I prefer to call it an ‘experience’) you’ll go to. We know this from the feedback we receive from attendees each year.
So, if you’re a potential first timer or solo attendee please don’t worry – you’ll find a really friendly field full of warm, chatty people.
What is the programme like?
The programme of speakers and workshops is fabulous and enriching. Comms Unplugged ticks all of your CPD boxes and regularly features exceptional comms people not always found on the regular circuit.
But, it’s the other elements which really make Comms Unplugged unique. From an early morning swim at gorgeous Knowle Beach, to live music, woodland walks, yoga and the tastiest food you’ll eat at a comms event. I believe that there is a definite space for non-traditional comms events. And it looks like this.
Need some selfish time? Do it.
It can feel selfish to dip out of work and family life for a couple of days but the post-Comms Unplugged benefits are multiple and long-lasting. Some attendees have described it as “life changing”. I can definitely see that.
We all need some solo time. So, don’t write off Comms Unplugged as not for you if any of this post resonates.

Best of all you’ll make some new friends in the field. And you can never have too many proper pals can you.
Tempted?
If you’re tempted to give Comms Unplugged a try this September and would like a chat about it shout me. I’m very happy to share more over a (decaf) coffee-fuelled Teams call.
Or, if I have convinced you already (crosses fingers), sign up now and get yourself in the field of dreams. I promise you won’t regret it.
